Directed by Chad Brummett

Dates: September 29-October 15, 2023
Times: Thu-Sat 7:30pm; Sun 2pm

Set at the end of the 19th century, Dracula is an absurdist adaptation by post-modernist playwright Mac Wellman (A Murder of Crows, The Hyacinth Macaw). Told in a non-linear, sometimes non-sensical manner, this version of Bram Stoker's novel is ripe with temptation, discovery, death and Alicia Keys.  This ain't your grandmother's Dracula.... it's more like your crazy drunk uncle's Dracula—the one that believes in vampires and Tom Waits.

CONTENT ADVISORY: This play contains loud noises, jump scares, adult themes of sexuality, one moment of retching, and lots of blood. Because it's Dracula.

Chad Brummett, director, has previously directed Macbeth and has appeared in Hamlet, Murder on the Orient Express, Incorruptible, A Streetcar Named Desire, Macbeth and others.  Mr. Brummett is also a well-known local television personality on New Mexico Living and has won three regional Emmy Awards for his work as a producer, writer, editor and photographer. Brummett says:
Dracula is my absolute favorite novel, having read it three times. Mac Wellman's adaptation—as bizarre as it is—comes closest to the novel's spirit and text. Wellman uses copy directly from Bram Stoker's novel and weaves his own post-modernist language into it, creating an unsettling, upside down, and passionate take on the story. Passion and sexual repression are at the core of Stoker's novel. Through the production, we'll see Mina and Lucy embrace their own identities, often leaving the "men who know better" in the dust. They are the captains of their own destiny. In a time when women's rights are once again under the thumb of others, a story of sexual & carnal liberation told through one of the most visceral stage adaptations of the book seems fitting.

This production features Quinn Mander (The Henry Project) as Van Helsing, Jeff Dolecek as the Count (Almost Maine, Love's Labour's Lost, As You Like It) and Abby Van Gerpen as Lucy (The Wizard of Oz, A Doll's House, Spamalot).
