Beginning Friday, October 21, 2022 the Vortex Theatre presents a live production of Athol Fugard's Blood Knot, directed by James L. Cady.
Blood Knot is a parable of two brothers who share a one-room shack near Port Elizabeth, South Africa: Zachariah is dark-skinned and Morris, light-skinned. Saving to buy a farm where they may retire, Morris does the cooking and cleaning while Zach earns money for them both. When Morris joins a lonely hearts club on his brother's behalf, they find themselves awaiting the visit of a White woman who will never arrive.
This production features Marcus Ivey (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, References to Salvador Dali) as Zachariah and Matthew Van Wettering (The Real Thing, All My Sons). James L. Cady (The Philadelphia Story, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Iceman Cometh) directs.
Director Cady says, "This play was written in 1961, at the height of apartheid in South Africa but still resonates. It trains a microscope on the toll of living in a world of racism."
